Semaglutide research: what the studies have looked at

This page summarises the published clinical research on semaglutide, for reference. It sets out what each trial tested and in whom, not an outcome for any individual, and it is not medical advice. Semaglutide is the active ingredient in approved medicines; the material we supply under this name is a research chemical for laboratory use only and is not those products.

What semaglutide is

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist, a peptide modelled on the gut hormone GLP-1 but altered so it lasts about a week in the body. It is approved and marketed as Ozempic and Rybelsus for type-2 diabetes and as Wegovy for weight management. The material we supply has the same identity but is unapproved research material, not any of those medicines, and it is for laboratory use only.

What the studies investigated

Marso et al. (2016), New England Journal of Medicine 375(19):1834-1844 (SUSTAIN-6). Human, cardiovascular-outcome trial, type-2 diabetes. Investigated a composite of cardiovascular events against placebo Source.

Wilding et al. (2021), New England Journal of Medicine 384(11):989-1002 (STEP-1). Human, phase-3, obesity. Investigated body-weight change over 68 weeks against placebo Source.

Lincoff et al. (2023), New England Journal of Medicine 389(24):2221-2232 (SELECT). Human, cardiovascular-outcome trial, overweight without diabetes. Investigated a composite of cardiovascular events against placebo Source.

Perkovic et al. (2024), New England Journal of Medicine 391(2):109-121 (FLOW). Human, outcome trial, type-2 diabetes with chronic kidney disease. Investigated a composite of kidney and cardiovascular endpoints against placebo Source.

Mechanism, as described in the literature

As a GLP-1 agonist it is described as slowing gastric emptying, increasing glucose-dependent insulin release and acting on the brain’s appetite centres. Its research base is unusually large for a peptide: alongside glucose and weight studies, cardiovascular and kidney outcome trials enrolled thousands of patients over years. Those endpoints belong to supervised clinical care and say nothing about a research powder used outside it.

The material we supply

We supply semaglutide as a research chemical, released against a written specification with a batch certificate of analysis. It is not Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsus or any other medicine, and it is not for human or animal use. For the vial sizes, the price per mg and how to order, see where to buy semaglutide wholesale; the COA lookup pulls the certificate for any batch. The references above link to each trial’s record; this summary is for research and educational reference only.

Common questions

Is semaglutide approved?

Yes, as a prescription medicine: Ozempic and Rybelsus for type-2 diabetes and Wegovy for weight management, among other markets. The research material we supply is not those products and is for laboratory use only.

What has semaglutide research looked at?

The SUSTAIN and STEP trials in diabetes and obesity and the SELECT and FLOW cardiovascular and kidney outcome trials, which measured events, HbA1c and body weight against placebo. The cited studies are listed above.

What is semaglutide?

A GLP-1 receptor agonist, a peptide based on the gut hormone GLP-1 and modified to act for about a week.
